The Writing Center Coordinator

Stefanie Vischansky is a Ph.D. student in the Department of English who specializes in 19th-century American Literature. She has been teaching and tutoring with the writing program for four years and is currently the College Writing Center Coordinator.  She enjoys tutoring students with writing from all disciplines.

The Writing Center Consultants

 

Barbara Alvarez is a reference librarian in Rush Rhees Library and specializes in Modern Languages and Cultures. Besides working at the reference desk, she teaches library research methods, develops the library's collection in the area of foreign languages, literatures and cultures, and assists students and faculty with finding answers to their research questions. Barbara joined the Writing Center Consultants in the Fall 2006 to provide tutoring in Spanish.

Heidi Bollinger is a Ph.D. student in English.  She studies 20th century American literature.  As a writing consultant, she especially enjoys brainstorming and reverse outlining drafts.  She especially likes working with application essays and argumentative papers in the humanities.

Kathleen Casey is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of History.  She has taught in the Writing Program for three years, teaching 105, 105 E, and ECO Writing.  As a writing consultant she particularly enjoys working with students in the social sciences and humanities. 

Beata Gomulak-Cavicchio is a Ph.D. candidate in the Developmental Psychology program of the Clinical and Social Psychology Department.  Although she is new to UR’s College Writing Center, she has worked as writing tutor during her undergraduate career.  She has also worked with many students to help them fulfill writing requirements as well as requirements for the honors thesis.  Her academic interests include the role of the family in children’s development, but she enjoys working with students on writing projects from across the disciplines. 

Dustin Hannum is a Ph.D. student in English, and studies 19th century American literature and aesthetics. He also teaches in the Writing program, and while he has the most experience working with 105 and 105E students, as a consultant he enjoys reading and talking about students' writing in all disciplines.

Leah Haught is a Ph.D. candidate in Department of English who specializes in medieval literature.  She teaches in the Writing Program and enjoys working with students on writing from any and all disciplines.

Annie Heckel is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of English who studies medieval literature and modern reconceptions of the medieval period.  In addition to tutoring, she works as the Writing Program’s Instructor Training Coordinator, and has taught several courses in the Writing Program in the past.

Dan Hutchins is a Ph.D. student in the English Department. His academic specialty is in Early American Literature and cultural theory. As a tutor in the writing program, Daniel enjoys working with a wide range of disciplines from the sciences to the humanities. As he is also a Writing Program instructor, he specializes in working with student papers from other 105 and 105E classes.

Rachel Lee is a Ph.D. student in the English Department, where she studies 18th century literature and British Romantic Poetry. She enjoys working on all aspects of the writing process (from brainstorming to polishing) and looks forward to writing projects from across the disciplines, application essays, and graduate level work. She also loves to argue, by which she means develop thesis statements, analyze evidence, and explore counterarguments.

Ann Marshall is a reference librarian in Rush Rhees Library with subject specialties in political science and law. She is familiar with many disciplines, especially political science, economics, anthropology and women's studies. In addition, she enjoys working with any type of writing. She has been a librarian at University of Rochester since January of 2003 and a librarian-writing consultant since spring of 2005. She received her Master's in Library of Science in 2002, her Ph.D. in the Social Science Program in 2001, and her Master's in Political Science in 1997, each from Syracuse University.

Kelly McNelis is a Ph.D. candidate in the Social Psychology program.  She is new to the College Writing Center, but has been working with UR students in upper-level writing courses for the past for years.  Most of her tutoring experience has been working with research papers, but she welcomes students from all disciplines and stages in the writing process.

Matt Moynihan is second year Ph.D. student in Chemical Engineering.  Matt enjoys working with students on science writing projects. 

Derya Ozkan is a Ph.D. candidate in the Graduate Program in Visual and Cultural Studies.  She has been working as a Writing Consultant since 2004.  She is interested in writing on art, architecture, cities, consumption, globalization, nationalism, and other topics in the humanities.  She especially enjoys brainstorming sessions and working on organization.

Jonathan Petruccelli is a Ph.D. candidate in Physics and Optics.  He has been involved in tutoring writing at the College Writing Center for over two years, both as an undergraduate and a graduate student.  Jon has experience in writing for professional science journals, but enjoys working with writing in all disciplines. 

Shirley Ricker is a reference librarian who specializes in Linguistics, Religion and Classics. She teaches library research sessions for some of the 105 and 105E writing courses in the College Writing Program. Shirley is especially interested in working with writers who have questions about finding and using good sources for a research paper. She is currently enjoying taking classes in writing short stories and essays at Writers and Books.

Katie VanWert is a Ph.D. student in the Department of English who studies contemporary American Literature.  She teaches 105 and 105E in the Writing Program.

Julietta Wolf-Foster, Senior Consultant, focuses on writing as process, and as a result enjoys working with writers of all levels in all subject areas—although she has a particular fondness for application essays. She has done graduate work in English, education, and theology and is a former T.A. in the Simon School’s management communications program.
