Dudley Doust Writing & Speaking Center Coordinator

The Dudley Doust Writing & Speaking Center Coordinator Fellowship is awarded to an outstanding writing consultant who has tutored in the Writing and Speaking Center (WSC) for a minimum of two semesters. Experience with both tutoring and teaching in WSAP is a plus. Exceptions may be made for candidates who have experience in other areas of WSAP or equivalent experience.

The Doust WSC Coordinator fellowship is typically awarded to graduate students beyond department funding. To receive a Doust fellowship, a recipient must be a current University of Rochester graduate student in good standing at the beginning of each semester for which the fellowship is awarded. 

Position Responsibilities

Working closely with the Writing & Speaking Center Director, the Doust WSC Coordinator will help organize and oversee the daily operations of the center from mid-August through May 30th. The position will require 15 hours a week, with 12 hours at the WSAP front desk (ideally in the afternoon), during which job duties will be performed. There is some flexibility around the schedule of front-desk hours.

Duties include: 

  • Managing the WSC schedule (importing hours; monitoring shift changes; entering standing appointments)
  • Reviewing, proofing, and sending session summaries
  • Coordinating and conducting class visits to publicize the WSC 
  • Maintaining tutoring spaces (keeping them orderly and well supplied)
  • Collaborating with WSC Director and WSAP office staff to manage the Undergraduate Writing Colloquium Contest 
  • Distributing, collecting and reviewing writing consultant evaluations 
  • Tracking weekly Writing & Speaking Center usage
  • Providing support for WSC events: Write-a-Thon and Night to Write
  • Contributing to WSC sections of the WSAP annual report
  • Assisting the Director with training of new writing consultants 

Candidates should demonstrate:

  • An interest in writing centers, writing pedagogy, and/or program administration
  • Timely and professional communication
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Attention to detail
  • Comfort with technology (e.g., Filemaker, Google Drive, Box)

Eligibility

Applicants should have tutored successfully in the Writing and Speaking Center for a minimum of two semesters.

Term of Appointment

This is a one-year position, with the possibility of renewal depending on performance, program needs and budget. 

Compensation

For those beyond department funding, compensation for this position is $22,000.

For those with department funding, compensation for this position would be the regular add-on stipend.
