College Writing Program

Attention Writing Instructors!

Job Title: Placement Advisor

(available Summer 2008)

Please note:
WRT 105 and WRT 105E were formerly CAS 105 and CAS 105E.

During the summer, the Writing Program conducts a writing placement process to help incoming freshmen decide between WRT 105E and WRT 105. Usually around 200 freshmen complete this process. We hire experienced WRT 105 instructors to help read students' writing and advise these students.

Period of employment: June– August 2008

Job responsibilities will include the following:

  • Calling students to introduce them to the process and answer any questions they may have at the outset. We will also have a training session to acclimate readers/callers to the placement process, as well as to the Blackboard site devoted to it. These things will take place in late May/early June.
  • Attending training sessions to become accustomed to evaluating student writing samples and advising students on selecting WRT 105 or 105E.
  • Reading and commenting on students' writing samples. Students will submit both a timed writing sample via Blackboard and a portfolio of their high school writing. This reading will take place during the first couple of weeks of August.
  • Advising students about WRT105/105E over the phone after reading their materials. This should take place over the last few weeks of August.
  • Assisting with on-site placement during freshmen orientation (including international student orientation) beginning Monday, August 25, and continuing through Thursday, August 28.

The pay is $15/ hour, and candidates will be chosen based in part on their availability for all aspects of the process, as this is a time-sensitive and intensive process in August. If you're interested in this position, please email Dustin Hannum, Writing Placement Coordinator (dhannum@mail.rochester.edu) with any questions you might have.
